Hollywood trims the turkeys for awards season

STAR MAN: Grauman's theater is where the stars leave a lasting impression. Ground broke for the historic Chinese Theatre in January 1926, with silent screen legend Norma Talmadge turning the dirt with a shovel presented by actress Anna May Wong . The tradition of stars making impressions in the theaters forecourt dates back to April 30, 1927 when Sid Grauman asked his friends Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks to leave their hand prints and footprints in wet concrete at the new $2-million theater. Eight days later, the theater had its star-studded grand opening. Since then a select number of big starsabout 200 in allhave been asked to participate. The vast majority of stars who can be found at Graumans also have stars on the Walk of Fame. Among the notable exceptions without Walk of Fame stars: Warren Beatty, Jim Carrey, Sean Connery, Jeanne Crain, Michael Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Richard Gere, Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Michael Keaton, Ali MacGraw, Hayley Mills, Marcello Mastroianni, Al Pacino, Steven Seagal, Peter Sellers, Jean Simmons, Denzel Washington and Oskar Werner.

But Zap2it's Laurel Brown points out that "for the most part, it's the shows that don't know why they exist -- other than having a connection to the past -- that falter. This is, unfortunately, all too common a problem." "It's hard to make a TV show a success," she wrote . "That's the thinking that often seems to be behind the idea of a reboot. But are reboots any help? Looking at their recent history, the answer may be a resounding no." We have seen it with shows such as "Charlies Angel's," "The Bionic Woman," "Love Boat," "Knight Rider," "Get Smart" and "Melrose Place." This season's "Ironside" was declared "worst new drama " by reviewer Brian Tallerico . As one TV Guide writer said, "Sometimes viewers have such strong memories of an original that the new version can never compare." "Honing the 'spirit' of a beloved show is difficult; recapturing it is even more so," writes Brie Hiramine of Flavorwire. "There is no magic formula for creating television that resonates, especially when trying to appease preexisting fans." Many pastors are realizing that in this video-driven culture, stories are the vessels of meaning. For many faith and family films, the impact on the screen is less the answers given than it is the questions asked that you could discuss over coffee with someone who would never go to church with you but go to a movie with you, he said. In some ways, Hollywoods fascination with the Bible isnt new: Hollywood drew on biblical storytelling after World War II, especially with Charlton Heston, who played Moses in The Ten Commandments, and Ben-Hur, a movie about a Jewish prince sent into slavery and rescued by Jesus. But some films flopped when they took too much license. The Last Temptation of Christ, Martin Scorseses 1988 film about the life of Jesus and the temptations he faced that included sex scenes, took in only $8.4 million domestically amid a widespread boycott led by Roman Catholics. Independent films have dealt with the Bible in the past, but its significant that major Hollywood studios are taking this up, said Tom Allen, a partner in Allied Faith & Family, a Hollywood marketing firm. Were beyond the cheap ministry movies that appeal only to a certain constituency, he said. As Hollywood looks to epic tales of floods, burning bushes and parting seas, films with biblical themes will also continue to pop up.
